Mahmood Patel is a Barbadian Filmmaker, Hotelier and a Regenerative Agriculturist. He is the Owner of
Ocean Spray Apartments, Mamu’s Café and Coco Hill Forest.
Ocean Spray Apartments is a boutique apartment complex on the seaside on the southeast coast of
Barbados. Ocean Spray started in 1993 and caters mostly to an independent traveler.
The Café is a forest to table restaurant that links the main tourism rental business and Coco Hill in a
linkage project that focus on food security. Our culinary ethos is “grow what you eat-eat what you
grow”.
Coco Hill forest is a subsidiary project self-funded by Ocean Spray that focus on agroforestry and
regenerative agriculture, and now evolving into agro-tourism.
Coco Hill Forest is 53 acres of both abandoned sugar cane that has regrown in bush and a small part 10-
15 acres of forest. We started the project in 2013 to plant tropical fruit trees focusing mainly on
coconuts. Coco Hill has planted approx. 40 varieties of tropical forest trees and fruit trees as well as
herbs, greens and medicinal. We have planted approx. 1000 trees since starting.
Coco Hill practices regenerative agriculture by looking at soil degradation, soil erosion and carbon
sequestration. We practice an integrated planting methodology to mimic the forest ecosystem. We also
do “Cut & Drop” from the forest trees to help create compost. The waste food from the café and Hotel is
sent to forest and made into compost. We also have a poultry section and the manure generated is
worked back into the planting beds.
A major difference is that we do terrace farming on the old sugar fields. Previous methods was to plant
sugar downhill but this created massive erosion issues. Our goal is to replant 20-30 acres using terracing
and regenerative methods to create a food forest.
